Pizotifen (Brand Name: Mosegor) belongs to the class of organic compounds known as cycloheptathiophenes. Pizotifen is an antihistamine with serotonin antagonist activity. Pizotifen is a potent serotonin and tryptamine antagonist with weak anticholinergic, antihistaminic and anti-kinin effects. It also has soothing and appetizing properties.
Mosegor Uses
Pizotifen hydrochloride is an active substance in Mosegor, which is suitable for the prophylactic treatment of migraine.
- Typical and atypical migraine
- Vasomotor headache
- Cluster headache (Horton syndrome)
- Reduce the frequency of attacks but have no effect on migraine attacks.
- Other uses include Depression or social anxiety.
- It is also used in the treatment of serotonin syndrome or MDMA (Animal Studies Suggest only)
Avoid Mosegor
Avoid Pizotifen if you:
- Already take monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors (e.g., tranylcypromine or phenelzine)
- Are you allergic to pizotifen or any of the drug’s ingredients?
- You are under 12 years old.
- Have lactose intolerance, galactose intolerance or glucose malabsorption (a rare hereditary disease)
- Has pylori duodenal obstruction or stenosing pyloric ulcers
- If you have ever had seizures or epilepsy.
- It should be used with caution in patients with glaucoma.
Mosegor’s mechanism of action:
Pizotifen is a serotonin antagonist that acts primarily on 5-HT2A and 5HT2C receptors. The mode of action of pizotifen to prevent migraine is not fully understood but is known to inhibit serotonin reuptake of platelets, avoiding extra-cranial tonus loss. It also has antidepressant and appetizing properties.

Studies in animals showed that no embryotoxic or teratogenic effects occurred and that fertility was not affected. Clinical data with pizotifen in pregnancy are very limited If the expected benefit risks outweigh the potential. Although pizotifen concentrations measured in the milk of treated mothers are not suitable to affect the baby, mothers’ use of lactation is not recommended.

Interaction With Other Drugs

- Drugs that cause drowsiness, such as cough- coldproducts that contain drowsiness-causing antihistamines (e.g, diphenhydramine),
- Psychiatric medicines,
- MAO inhibitors Like selegiline, furazolidone, tranylcypromine, phenelzine, moclobemide, linezolid).
- Narcotic pain relievers such as codeine,
- Sedatives,
- Tranquilizers,
- Anti-seizure drugs,
- Muscle relaxants.
Mosegor Dose
- The usual dose of pizotifen usually starts low (0.5 mg at bedtime) and gradually increases to 0.5 mg three times a day.
- The average maintenance dose is 1.5 mg per day.
- The dose range is from 1 mg to 6 mg per day, depending on the response to the drug.
- The goal is to achieve the lowest dose that best prevents migraine without causing significant side effects. It may take up to 4 weeks for the drug to reach its maximum effect.
