Betahistine is the active ingredient in Betaserc and it is used to treat vertigo associated with Meniere’s disease.

Precautions

Betaserc Mechanism

Betahistine has two modes of action. First, it has a direct (agonistic) stimulating effect on the H1 receptors in the blood vessels of the inner ear. It seems to affect the precapillary sphincter in the vascular stria of the inner ear, thus reducing the pressure in the endolymphatic space.

In addition, betaserc has a strong antagonistic effect on H3 receptors and increases the number of neurotransmitters released by nerve endings. Increasing the amount of histamine released from the histaminergic nerve endings stimulates the H1 receptors, which increases the direct agonistic effects of betahistine in these receptors.

This explains the strong vasodilatory effects of betahistine in the inner ear and its effectiveness in the treatment of vertigo.

Drug Interactions

• Antihistamines (e.g., diphenhydramine, cetirizine, chlorpheniramine)
• Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs; e.g., moclobemide, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine)
• Beta-2 agonists (e.g., salbutamol, salmeterol, fenoterol, formoterol).
